April Smallies on the fly

From mid to late April I had some good action on Juniata River smallmouth bass. There is nothing I love more than throwing streamers for smallmouth. Their aggressive, predatory nature is second to none and they could be, pound for pound, the hardest fighting fish in freshwater.

My go to pattern for river smallies is a size 4 clouser minnow with size small dumbbell eyes in olive over tan. Most of these fish were caught on this pattern. I also picked up a few on clousers of the same size but yellow and red in color (I use these when I encounter muddy or off color water).
