Saltwater Success!

I’m just getting back from Ocean City Maryland where I was with  my family for a few days. The wife gave me the go ahead to bring my fly fishing gear and fish as long as I didn’t wake her and my son up when I left in the mornings (neither are morning people haha).  Fly fishing the surf is something I have always wanted to do, and I had previously tied up a small assortment of saltwater streamers should the opportunity present itself.  On our trip, I was able to get two fishing trips in early in the morning and get back to the hotel just as they were waking up to head to the beach.

At 5:30 am the first morning, I set out to the bay side of Ocean City Maryland for my first ever saltwater fly fishing trip.  Beginners luck must have kicked in because I got a nice speckled trout (sea trout) on my second cast! I was fishing a chartreuse and white deceiver. While this was the only fish I caught either time I went fishing, I considered it a huge success since I’m brand new to fly fishing saltwater.

The next morning I got up even early, starting out slightly before 5:00 am. I had high hopes given my small glimmer of success the day before. However, a little over 3 hours on the water yielded no bites. Surf fishing, especially with a fly rod, I’m learning is a challenging sport, but I have to say I’m hooked. I’m looking forward to learning more and getting out after the saltwater fish anytime I’m at the shore. Even though I didn’t catch anything on day two it still was an amazing experience to be out on the water as the sun came up.

Our family had a blast enjoying the beach, boardwalk, and other Ocean City attractions as well. It was my sons first trip to the beach and lots of great memories were made!
